Description Technical Specs Extended Information

The 2002 issue of these distinctive gold coins commemorates the contribution they have made to Canada's rich coinage heritage. Drawing upon two authentic 1912 specimens that were graciously provided by the Bank of Canada, the Royal Canadian Mint faithfully reproduced their original specifications. With the exception of the reigning monarch (and relevant legends) that appears on the obverse and the dates that appear on the reverse, tehse five and ten dollar gold coins appear as they did when tehy were first issued over 90 years ago. It was 1912 when domestic gold coins with distinctly Canadian desgins made their debut. They featured the shield from the Canadian Coat of Arms and branches of the maple tree. The shield was divided into four sections to highlight each province that originally formed the Dominion in 1867 - Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Struck in denominations of five and ten dollars, the role of these gold coins in Canda was brief, coming to an abrupt end in 1914 when the uncertainty of the First World War prompted Canada's citizens and banks to hold onto this precious metal.
