This coin is part of a series by the Royal Canadian Mint showcasing the uniqueness of Canada's Great Lakes. Some key features make these coins especially covetable-the coin is struck in deep negative relief (incuse) to indicate the varying depths of the lake. The space is then filled with vibrant, translucent blue enamel that shimmers on the surface of the coin the way the lake would shimmer under the white-light of the Canadian sun-in the First Nations Huron language, "Ontario" means "shining waters". This charming interpretation of a bathymetric map is further accentuated by the inclusion of fine lines and ridges indicating the topography of the land surrounding Lake Ontario, which is bordered by the Province of Ontario and the American state of New York. Lake Ontario is the eastern-most of the Great Lakes, making it the final gateway to the Atlantic Ocean. A limited mintage of 10,000 makes this coin (and the rest of the coins in this series) a fantastic addition to any collection. With a diameter of 38mm and a weight of one ounce of fine silver, this item is not only a substantial gift, but the series itself is a fun, unique way to explore Canadian geography.
