This fantastic coin is part of a series of fine silver coins featuring life-like interpretations of prehistoric creatures found in what is now modern-day Canada. Seen here is the unfamiliar Xenoceratops Foremostensis, the oldest species of its kind discovered in Canada! In 2003, a team of Canadian palaeontologists reopened a case of fossils first found in 1958 and placed in storage at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa; by 2012, they had verified it to be a new species and genus. This dinosaur is named so from the Greek words “xenos”, meaning “foreign” and “ceratops”, meaning “horned face”. “Foremostensis” derives from the location the excavated fragments were found: the Foremost Formation in Alberta. The reverse image shows Canadian artist Julius Csotonyi’s interpretation of the xenoceratops as it might have looked during its native cretaceous period. Its most characteristic features are a beak-like mouth, large, pointed skull frills, horn, big muscular body and comparatively short legs. The scientific accuracy of the depiction of the dinosaur on this coin was verified by the same palaeontologists that discovered and described the xenoceratops in 2012. This coin, presented in a full ounce of 99.99% fine silver, has been painstakingly detailed with multiple frostings that accent its body features and markings, bringing life to the pebble-textured skin of the dinosaur. With a low mintage of 8,500, this coin is sure to be a hit amongst coin collectors and dinosaur enthusiasts alike.
