This coin is part of what is possibly one of the most exciting series recently released by the Royal Canadian Mint. This series highlights significant milestones and eras in Canadian exploration throughout history. It also aims to capture the joy of adventure and discovery, esteeming the bold explorers, pioneering people whose thirst for the unknown have shaped Canadian identity. This particular coin boasts a thrilling depiction of the Vikings, ancient -Norse - seafarers who spoke the Old Norse language, raiding and trading from their Scandinavian homelands across wide areas of northern and central Europe, as well as European Russia, during the late 8th to late 11th centuries. The history of early Viking exploration in North America unravels more and more with the advancements of modern archeological technology, spinning a thrilling tale of their journey across modern-day Canada! The image on this coin by Canadian artist John Mantha depicts an imposing Viking ship coming ashore on the rocky coast of Vinland ("the land of wine", the name given by the Vikings to the lush, abundant land far across the Atlantic). The bold captain points the way as he directs his oarsmen seated behind a row of shields. This stunning $15 coin is struck in two-thirds of an ounce of 99.99% fine silver, boasting a stunning matte-proof finish. This is an excellent way to begin collecting this exciting 10-coin series; alternatively, it would make a bold addition to any collection of historical Canadian silver coins.
