This 2014 $5 coin is part of a popular series of coins called "Flowers in Canada", and features a beautiful poinsettia, just in time for the holidays. This unique series utilizes the metallic element Niobium to present the poinsettia in striking colour.
To create this coin, the Royal Canadian Mint has combined new and innovative minting technology with a classic flower image. The centre core of the coin is struck in pure niobium which has been naturally oxidized to refract light and create a vibrant crimson colour. The niobium core is then encircled by a ring of bright pure silver with a proof finish to create a brilliant frame and a striking contrast to the naturally coloured centre. With a mintage of just 6,000, this unique coin is both a low mintage collectible and a beautiful work of art.
The word "Canada" and the denomination "5 dollars" is along the rim of the coin.
