Description Technical Specs Extended Information
This 2014 $5 fine silver coin emulates a coin that was part of a unique series issued by England's Royal Mint to celebrate the life of HRM Queen Elizabeth II, the United Kingdom's longest-reigning monarch. This series was produced in conjunction with eleven Commonwealth countries.

The design on the reverse of this coin by artist Trevor Tennant depicts the Queen walking past a line of troops in support, regarding them with reverence, appreciation and understanding. This is likely due to her own personal experiences as a princess during World War II. The reverse of the coin also features the words "CANADA" and "SUPPORTING THE TROOPS/SOUTIEN AUX TROUPES" on an angle around the rim. The text is embellished with ribbons of maple leaves.

This unique coin is struck in two-thirds of an ounce of 99.99% fine silver, and has a mintage of 15,000 coins worldwide. As a pure silver coin, this item is GST/HST-exempt.

Queen Elizabeth II and her role in the Second World War:
It is a little-known fact that the now-Queen Elizabeth II was a headstrong eighteen-year-old princess during World War II that begged her father to let her join in the war efforts. She was allowed to join the Women's Auxiliary Territorial Service, and became known as Second Subaltern Elizabeth Windsor. Photographs of the young princess at this time show her decked in coveralls, offering glimpses into her life in London as a mechanic and military truck driver. To this day, Queen Elizabeth II remains the only female member of the royal family to have entered the Armed Forces and is the only living head of state who has served in the Second World War.
