The second coin in the handsome Sea Creatures series, this piece is struck in 1/25th of an ounce of pure gold, and features an unusual face value of 50 cents. It honours the fascinating seahorse, a sea-dwelling creature that lives along the coastline of Nova Scotia. Its scientific name, Hippocampus, comes from the Ancient Greek words “hippos”, meaning “horse”, and “kampos” meaning, “sea monster”. Seahorses swim upright, and the males of the species carry the eggs of baby seahorses for 9 to 45 days until the children emerge fully formed from a kangaroo-like pouch. The bony armour that covers the creature’s body is captured in fine detail, illuminated by the proof finish of this spectacular (and affordable) gold coin. With a limited mintage of 7,500 pieces, this would make a thoughtful and unique gift for a Nova Scotian, or anyone who is fascinated by the mysteries of the sea.
