Fourth coin in the Royal Canadian Mint’s enchanting series that features heartwarming depictions of baby animals in the wild.
To celebrate Canada’s rich biodiversity, the Royal Canadian Mint highlights the animal kingdom’s family bonds in a series that features endearing images of Canada’s baby animals. The fourth coin in this series showcases a bear species that is found in nearly all of Canada’s provinces and territories: the black bear.
This $20 coin is 99.99% pure silver, with a diameter of 38 millimetres and a metal weight of 31.39 grams. The reverse design by Canadian artist Clinton Jammer features a young black bear cub with its mother in a natural setting. A three-quarter profile of the bear cub provides a view of its features, from the soft facial expression down to the cub’s paws. The cub is seated in front of a salmonberry plant; both engraved elements are enhanced by the use of selective colouring which vividly recreates their colouring in the wild. On the left side of the cub, the sow appears from beyond the image and is rendered in fine detail by expert engraving.
