The third and final coin in the Royal Canadian Mint’s Butterflies of Canada series celebrates the bright yellow Colias gigantea with an exquisitely engraved and selectively coloured silver coin featuring reflective, shimmery colour to bring life and movement to this beautiful natural image.
The reverse design by Canadian artist Celia Godkin features a portrait of a Colias gigantea drinking nectar from the heart of a wild strawberry flower. The butterfly, engraved and painted in shimmery, light-reflective colour, is viewed in profile from its right side. Standing on one of two strawberry blossoms engraved in exceptional detail, alongside a bud and three leaves from the same plant, the brightly coloured butterfly characteristically raises its wings as it stands and feeds. Here we are treated to a view of the lovely silver dot on the underside of its wing.
A lovely addition to any collection featuring fine artwork, natural images, native species of Canada, butterflies and other insect species, or Canadiana.
