Part of the Majestic Animals series - Sold Out at the RCM. Limited quantities still available from Canadian Coin & Currency!
This beautiful $20 fine silver coin “Misty Morning Mule Deer” is the fourth design in the extremely popular “Majestic Animals of Canada” series, and the second that is part of a new series. This coin and the recent Bighorn Sheep are the lowest mintage issues, and will likely be the most elusive for future collectors to find.
As the predominant deer species throughout western Canada and southern portions of the Yukon, the mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) roams the mountains, forests and grasslands in search of the grasses, foliage and lichen that sustain it. This creature of beauty and majestic stature plays a vital role in its ecosystem, but is also admired for its majestic stature. With this breathtaking silver coin, the Royal Canadian Mint celebrates a beloved animal whose presence adds to the remarkable beauty found in Canada’s great outdoors.
The reverse image by Canadian artist Trevor Tennant recreates the breathtaking colours of an autumn morning in one of western Canada’s many forests. Here, a male and female mule deer have made their way to lower elevations where they have entered a foothills meadow to forage. The early morning light creates a blue cast on the misty scenery, softening the vibrant autumn colours of the surrounding foliage. In the foreground, the buck stands tall and attentive to any sound, turning its head to the left, while a doe follows behind in the background; with the annual rutting season soon approaching, this male’s swollen neck and large rack already contribute to its imposing stature, making him the dominant male within his territory. A beautiful overlay of colour to the engraved design allows the viewer to glimpse the mule deer’s distinctive characteristics, from the dark tan-coloured fur with white patches on its throat and face, to the long black-rimmed ears and the buck’s forked antlers.
The first two coins in the series all sold out very quickly from the Royal Canadian Mint even though they had substantially higher mintages than this new coin. The “Iconic Polar Bear” had a mintage of 8,500, and the “Majestic Moose” had a mintage of 7,500, while this new coin has a total mintage of just 6,500 coins. The recent Bighorn Sheep, which is the first coin in the series, also had a mintage of 6,500, and it sold out from the Royal Canadian Mint early in the morning of the issue date.
The coin is double struck with the Royal Canadian Mint’s highest quality proof finish, and weighs just over one full ounce of .9999 fine silver. As a pure silver coin issued by the Royal Canadian Mint, this item is HST / GST exempt.
