A stunning sunset on Canada’s icy Arctic coast blazes brightly in this unique maple leaf portrayal. The third and final coin in our series featuring Canadian flora and fauna set against the nation’s three coastlines.
The reverse image by Curtis Atwater features a beluga surfaces among the ice floes of the frigid Arctic waters. Coupled with the imposing outline of the iceberg in the background, the whale’s raised head and tail mimic the distinctive shape of the bold red maple leaf sunset, which is reflected in the waters below. Detailed engraving and selective colouring make the sunset glow and the Arctic waters shimmer.
Third and final chapter in our journey along Canada’s shores—from east to west, and now across the north, where the icy waters are home to a “smiling” Arctic icon: the beluga.
