Coin No. 1: Springtime Gifts - May, 2017

This 2017 $20 fine silver coin uses a large 60 mm one ounce format masterfully combine two colour technologies. Texturized colour is used to raise some of the elements like the easel-mounted canvas, and provide a sense of depth to the design, while the canvas effect adds life-like texture to the painting. Adding to its collectability, the mintage is extremely limited to just 5,500. As a pure silver coin struck by the Royal Canadian Mint, this item is HST/GST exempt.

On the coin’s reverse, Canadian artist Elizabeth Sim has created an immersive viewing experience by blurring the line between reality and perception. Stretching across the entire reverse, the borderless background image offers a photo-realistic close-up of a flowerbed—specifically one that showcases several Canada 150 tulips in full bloom. In contrast, the easel-mounted canvas in the foreground is positioned in a way that suggests the viewer is in fact the artist, as the eye naturally lingers on the finished painting of the white and red-flamed tulip. This simulation of a plein air painting experience is further enhanced by the integration of two advanced technologies: Texturized Colour, which gives the design its sense of depth and dimension by subtly raising the easel and canvas; and Canvas Effect, which artfully adds a touch of realism by mimicking the surface textures of a finished painting—including the artist’s brushstrokes.

Coin No. 2: Maritime Memories - June, 2017

This 2017 $20 fine silver coin uses a large 60 mm one ounce format and masterfully combines two colour technologies.

The reverse design by Canadian artist Elizabeth Sim captures the beauty, tranquillity and spirit of a maritime setting in Atlantic Canada. Stretching across the entire reverse, the borderless background image creates an immersive viewing experience by drawing the viewer into the setting; one can almost feel the warmth of sunshine and the smell of sea salt in the air as the eye takes in the weathered buildings and fishing boats. Texturized Colour separates the easel-mounted canvas from its true-to-life surroundings, seamlessly raising it to create a sense of depth within the design. The easel is also positioned to suggest the viewer is the artist and creator of the finished landscape painting, where Canvas Effect technology mimics surface textures such as brushstrokes.

Coin No. 3: A Paddle Awaits - July, 2017

Imagine coming upon a setting so inspiring, it leaves you yearning to preserve the splendour of that particular moment in time, when nature serves as both muse and studio—this is the essence of painting en plein air. And for many Canadians, our love for the outdoors in unrivalled: it’s where some of our fondest memories are made, and where we find the serenity that restores, renews and inspires us. This final coin in the En plein air series transforms the viewer into the “artist” once more, with an immersive design that evokes memories of treasured summer moments. To create this true-to-life viewing experience, the reverse utilizes TEXTURIZED COLOUR to raise some of the elements (the easel-mounted canvas) and set it apart from its surroundings, while CANVAS EFFECT adds texture to the painting!

The reverse design by Canadian artist Elizabeth Sim is filled with all the warmth of a summer day, as it speaks of a personal connection with nature. The cottage setting is a familiar one to many Canadians; stretching across the entire reverse, the borderless background image creates the feeling of standing at the water’s edge, looking out at a dock and the kayak that awaits a late afternoon excursion. While Texturized Colour technology sets it apart from its surroundings, the easel-mounted canvas is positioned in a way that suggests the viewer is in fact the artist who has captured this idyllic setting on canvas. The use of Canvas Effect technology adds yet another touch of realism by re-creating the characteristic surface texture of a finished painting, such as the brushstrokes and the fibres of the canvas.

OUR THINNEST COINS! Crafted from 1 oz. of 99.99% pure silver, these extra-thin coins have an extra-large diameter (60 mm)—perfect for an immersive design that covers the entire reverse, from edge to edge!
