Scarce, popular, beautiful, and visually impressive in the big five ounce 65 mm format, this highest quality annual proof set from the Royal Canadian Mint has a three year running track record of selling out immediately from the mint and appreciating in value in the secondary market to as much as $1,200 per coin. Big Coins 2018 features many reasons at the top of our “most recommended” list.
While the 2017 Big Coins sold out immediately from the RCM with a mintage of 2,150, the mintage for the new 2018 issue has been reduced to just 1,500, significantly enhancing scarcity and collectability. New for 2018, the Big Coin Dollar features a classic Voyageur design originally introduced for Canada’s first dollar coin in 1935. Also new to the 2018 set, the collection has been extended to include seven denominations with the return of the Maple Leaf one cent design. The Big Coin cent is expected to be the “key” coin in the set, as it will not be sold individually, and can only be obtained when subscribing to the entire collection.
Also new for 2018, each coin is enhanced with a selective overlay of rose coloured gold on both sides, which provides brilliant contrast to the familiar designs and to the effigy of Queen Elizabeth. Each coin in the set has a large 65 mm diameter and contains just over five ounces of .9999 fine silver. For collectors of the “absolute best”, Big Coins is highly sought after as Canada’s absolute highest quality annual set of all the familiar denominations. As pure silver coins produced by the Royal Canadian Mint, this collection is GST / HST exempt.
We recommend ordering early to secure your complete set at the original issue price!
2018 Big Coins is being released one denomination at a time, approximately every second month. The first coin is the Voyageur Dollar, which will be shipped immediately with your order. Each coin will be shipped as they are released, and will be billed at $559.95 each as they are shipped. While the first six coins will be delivered in individual cases, the final coin in the series will arrive in a high quality wood presentation case with space to house and display all seven coins together.
• Mintage has been reduced from 2,150 in 2017 down to just 1,500!
• New dollar coin features the classic Voyageur design
• Now with a seventh coin – the maple leaf design cent will only be available with the subscription, and will likely be the key to the set with a mintage below 1,500.
• All coins are enhanced with a layer of selective rose gold on both sides
• No issue price increase from the higher mintage 2017 issue
• New Seven Coin wood case included
Voyageur Dollar (First coin)
While the dollar coin for every Big Coins series to date has been the most sought after denomination in the series, the new 2018 dollar is likely to be even more collectible. Instead of the regular Loon design, the 2018 Big Coins dollar features the classic Voyageur design introduced in 1935 on Canada’s first circulating dollar coin. The design features a Native Canadian and a Voyageur (a travelling agent for a fur company) paddling a canoe past a small island with two wind swept trees. The vertical lines in the background represent the northern lights. While this design appeared on circulating dollars in Canada until the loon dollar was introduced in 1987, this is the first time ever it has been struck in pure silver in a large five ounce format, and the result is a spectacular piece of numismatic art.One Cent (Last Coin)
The last coin in the collection will feature the return of the one cent denomination, which was officially discontinued in 2012. This coin will only be available as part of a subscription, and will not be available from the Royal Canadian Mint as a single coin. Accordingly, this will be the lowest mintage coin in the series, with a mintage that will be less than 1,500. This will be a spectacular return of the cent denomination in the five ounce silver big coin format with the design highlighted in rose gold.
The five cents, ten cents, 25 cents, 50 cents and two dollar coins all feature the familiar designs we find in our coinage. However, each one is now a big five ounce 65 mm coin double struck with the highest quality proof finish, and overlaid with selective rose gold.
