Description Technical Specs Extended Information

Struck in two-thirds of an ounce of pure silver, this is the third coin in the beautiful Bank Notes series by the Royal Canadian Mint. The series brilliantly reproduces the artful decadence of early banknote vignettes, and captures the splendour of a technique that will soon be lost in history. This particular coin features one of the most ancient symbols of power: the lion. For as long as 30,000 years, cultures across the earth have used the lion to convey the idea of courage, royalty, power and dominance. The lion remains a popular symbol in contemporary culture, and can still be seen on heraldic emblems and arms internationally. Here we see a vignette that was used by the early Canadian Northern Crown Bank, which was purchased by the Royal Bank of Canada in 1918. The depiction of this lion romanticizes his stateliness, as we see him standing proudly in a dramatic mountain settling. The engravers at the Royal Canadian Mint have exceptionally captured the mastery of the original engraving, as each strand of the lions rippling mane is brought to life, and the details of early twentieth century scrollwork and lettering are crafted in high detail. Featuring a mintage of 8,500, this proof coin is sure to become a collector’s item, worthy of a place in any distinguished collection of fine silver.
