Description Technical Specs Extended Information
Well before the coming of the first European settlers, Canada's aboriginal peoples had discovered the food properties of maple sap, which they gathered every spring. Today the sugar maple is one of the most important Canadian trees, the major source of sap for making maple syrup. Canada produces more than 80 percent of the world's maple syrup.

The maple leaf today appears on the penny. However, between 1876 and 1901, it appeared on all Canadian coins. The modern one-cent piece has two maple leaves on a common twig, a design that has gone almost unchanged since 1937.

Lester B. Pearson, in World War I, noted that every Canadian battalion had included some form of the maple leaf in its insignia. Under his leadership as Prime Minister of Canada, on February 15, 1965, the red maple leaf flag was inaugurated as the National Flag of Canada.

'To thee we brought our hopes, our dreams,
For thee we stand together,
Our land of peace, where proudly flies,
The Maple Leaf forever.'
