Description Technical Specs Extended Information

The demand of resources during the Korean War resulted in the switch of nickel to steel in the production of 5 cent coins. It was realized during this change that steel was much harder to strike than nickel and required new low relief tools. By mistake, coins were struck in both high and low relief during 1951, and this particular coin represents the high relief variety. Accented by dark toning in the high relief areas, the strike still maintains good detail, but does show signs of wear. A scratch can be noted on the obverse, through the monarch's portrait. A notable coin for any collection.
