Description Technical Specs Extended Information

The demand of resources during the Korean War resulted in the switch of nickel to steel in the production of 5 cent coins. It was realized during this change that steel was much harder to strike than nickel and required new low relief tools. By mistake, coins were struck in both high and low relief during 1951, and this particular coin represents the high relief variety. A luminous shine graces the surface of the coin, with only select areas of dark toning in the well-protected regions of the design. Strong relief details remain, with slight signs of wear from circulation. A scratch can also be noted on the obverse, through the monarch's portrait. A delightful coin overall.
