Description Technical Specs Extended Information
This is a near perfect superb gem uncirculated example of Canada’s first silver dollar struck for circulation in 1935. It has been independently third party certified by PCGS (Professional Coin Grading Service) as Mint State 66, making it one of the finest known surviving examples and a major rarity in this grade. This is a sharply struck example with near flawless surfaces.

Although other foreign “dollars” had circulated in Canada for over 100 years, Canada did not produce its own dollar denomination for circulation until 1935. The 1935 silver dollar was originally created as a one-time issue to celebrate the Silver Jubilee – the 25th year of the reign of King George V, but was so well received by the public that the government decided to continue the issue in 1936.

The reverse design features a native Canadian and a Voyageur paddling a canoe. In the canoe are bundles of goods; the bundles at the right are marked with “HB”, representing the Hudson’s bay company. The vertical lines in the background represent the aurora borealis. The obverse design features a portrait of King George V wearing the Imperial Crown. The legend around the perimeter indicates that it was the 25th year of the king’s reign.

The 1935 silver dollar was treated primarily as a circulation coin rather than as a collectible, and most of the coins issued circulated widely. Even when the coins were new, few coins were issued in perfect condition, as they were transported in canvas bags of 1,000 pieces where they usually became marked with “contact marks” from banging against other coins. Superb coins like this Gem Uncirculated example remain today as scarce and highly sought after collectibles representing the absolute best of Canada’s first silver dollar issued for circulation.
