The year 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the Canadian Wildlife Federation (CWF), an organization that has achieved exceptional results in conserving Canadian wilderness and Canadians about environmental issues that concern us all. Robert Bateman, the coin designer, is a world-renowned wildlife artist and an unflagging proponent of wildlife conservation and education. Mr. Bateman is an Honorary Life Member of CWF.
The reverse image features a detail from Robert Bateman’s original lithograph, Bull Moose. The original artwork presents a stunning three-quarter-profile bust of a bull moose, with its striking rack of antlers, characteristic muzzle, bell, and massive shaggy shoulders rendered in graceful detail. Royal Canadian Mint engravers have fully captured the textural, figurative strokes of the original artwork to create a coin of singular artistry. The image is placed with precise balance within the borderless ground of the coin’s reverse side. In a Royal Canadian Mint first, Robert Bateman’s signature is engraved at the lower left side of the image.
