Description Extended Information

From the late 1940's through to the early 1970's, an affluent Halifax resident stashed away more than $200,000 in banknotes obtained directly from his bank. Most were the average circulated notes of the time, although some were also in groups of brand new notes. Physical cash provided the original owner with a sense of security in a world where family history and world events caused him to have a distrust in banks and traditional investments. For collectors today, the notes provide an unusual opportunity to acquire quantities of Canadian banknotes from about 50 years ago that were not widely saved.

This lot includes 10 modified variety bank notes, packaged individually in banknote sleeves and held together with a special 'Halifax Hoard' band. The notes are generally in mid-grade Fine to Extremely Fine condition. Damaged or problem notes have been removed, leaving only collector quality notes. This series features a portrait of the 27 year old Queen Elizabeth II on the front, and a landscape image of the Laurentian Hills in winter on the back. Two different signature combinations appear on these notes (Beattie / Coyne and Beattie / Rasminsky), and both types will be included in each lot.

(Please note: images are examples only. Actual notes will vary in quality, signatures and serial numbers.)
